Abuja – The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, has said Nigeria is currently discussing with neighbouring countries to tackle the problem of insurgency.

Maku, who was the Supervising Minister of Defence, made the statement in Abuja on Friday while handing over to the new Minister of Defence, Gen. Aliyu Gusau.

He said some of the attacks were carried out by elements from across Nigeria’s borders but that Nigeria was discussing with its neighbours to address the situation.

“I want to also emphasise that a lot of the elements have been coming from across the boundary and we have had occasions to discuss that very frankly.

“We believe that Nigeria is also in touch with their neighbours to contain the situation.

“I commend the armed forces for facing the challenges head on, and we must change the story as quickly as we can because it is crucial for this country.

“ I know for sure that our armed forces have been doing a great job.”

Maku urged the armed forces to remain loyal to the constitution and President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to him, loyalty is 100 per cent and cannot be 99 per cent.

He said that the most important element of a soldier was his loyalty to the Constitution of Nigeria and to the Commander-in-Chief.

“We are heading toward an electoral situation in Nigeria and there have been a lot of utterances from within and outside the country relating to the unity and future of Nigeria.

“ I am aware that Mr. President has variously assured the world that these elections will be freer than what we saw in 2011.

“One great thing the armed forces must continue to do is remain very loyal to our constitution and to democracy, ‘’Maku added.

On his part, Gusau said that the ministry had recorded remarkable successes in some areas but could do much better in other areas.

Gusau commended the efforts, courage and commitment of troops in mission areas, both at home and abroad, particularly their sacrifices in recent times.

“The challenges are evidently daunting but surmountable; with the help of Almighty Allah and our collective resolve and determination, we will get to the destination.

“That will give Nigerians the confidence that the country is indeed a safe place for everyone.

“ I applaud the achievements of the past and look forward to adding our modest contribution in the months ahead, ‘’ he said. (NAN)
