The Kebbi Government on Friday in Birnin Kebbi directed the closure of the Government Girls’ Secondary School located in the Yauri Local Government Area.
Alhaji Muhammad Ruwa, the state’s Commissioner for Science and Technical Education, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said the closure was sequel to two fire outbreaks in the school in one month, and which had thus led to the destruction of four hostels in the school.
The commissioner said the state government directed that the school be closed for two weeks and a committee constituted to investigate the source of the Fire.
“The committee is expected to also determine the extent of damage to the students’ property destroyed in the inferno,’’ he said.
Ruwa said long-term preventive measures would also be adopted in all schools to prevent a re-occurrence.
NAN reports that the first fire incident had seen the destruction of two female hostels which accommodates 400 students.
The latest fire incident saw the destruction on Thursday of another two female hostels accommodating 400 students.
Ruwa said the latest incident occurred in the afternoon while the students were attending classes and expressed surprise that it happened when there was no electricity supply.
He said no life was lost while the affected students had been provided with alternative accommodation.
The commissioner however said the source of the fire outbreak was yet to be determined.
He said the Fire Service Department in the area could not put out the fire due to the non-availability of functional fire-fighting vehicles.(NAN)
