The Cross River State Government has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps not to issue driving licence to persons without adequate education and knowledge of traffic rules.

The state Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, stated this when he received the new Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Alvansus Nwachukwu, in Calabar.

According to him, drivers must be informed of traffic regulations before they are given driving permit.

Bassey said, “There are many people in the state, who have no business driving vehicles because such persons hardly obey road signs and the majority of them are illiterates, who cannot read road signs or obey such signs.

“In the past, the Vehicle Inspection Officers did carry out comprehensive tests on people applying to be granted driving licence and only those who passed such tests were considered eligible for the permits but the practice now is that every person is given the licence without test and this has contributed to the high rate of carnage on our roads.”

Bassey also urged the FRSC to conduct periodic checks on drivers in order to fish out those who drive under the influence of alcohol.
