As the 2015 general elections draw nearer, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubabakar, has urged politicians in the country, to shun politics of bitterness and rancor. He made the appeal yesterday while receiving former vice president, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku in his palace in Sokoto.

Abubakar told politicians that it is only God that gives power to whoever He wishes and urged them to play politics with decorum.

His words: “We expect politicians to take election as a game, in which winners of elections should embrace losers and work together for the progress of the country.

So, our politicians should fear God and work for the benefit of the people rather than their personal interests.”Jonathan-and-Sultan

He described Governor Aliyu Wamakko as a dedicated leader, who was committed to the welfare of the people of the state, saying that peace prevails in the state because Wamakko runs a people-oriented government.

Earlier, Atiku said his visit to Sokoto was to commission some projects executed by Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

At different commissioning ceremonies, the former vice president lauded Governor Wamakko for the projects executed in the state under his administration, noting that Wamakko had impacted tremendously on the lives of the people through the execution of people oriented projects which made him popular among the rural folks.

“I have seen several projects executed in the area of education, healthcare, housing, and agricultural sectors and that have no doubt increasingly shower Governor Wamakko’s political popularity in the state,” he noted.

Atiku also advocated the need to decentralise the power and huge resources allotted to the central to the state governments. He reasoned that the government at the state level execute the most visible projects that have direct bearing on the people.

“There is need to decentralise the power and funds allocated to the central government and give same to the state governments. Because, the most important and visible projects are done at the state level.,” he explained.
