WASHINGTON—The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Alhaji Attahiru Jega has termed Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor’s statement that INEC intend to deny Christians their voting rights as unjustified, and unfortunate.

The electoral boss made this statement in Washington at a world press conference organized by the federal government’s PR firm Levick.

“It is unfortunate and regrettable that such comments are coming from highly placed Nigerians”.

‘I can tell the whole world that it is not true that INEC intends or plans to disenfranchise any group or religion”. “INEC commission has religious balance with two commissioners from all geo-ethnic areas”.

“Nigerians are used to suspecting any steps of INEC, anything we do politicians read meanings to it”

Jega, advised Nigerians to trust the system while assuring the international community that the commission will deliver in 2015.

“We’ve done extensive preparations. We have brought additional and remarkable improvement to the electoral process and we feel confident that the electoral process will be remarkably better.”

Professor Jega declared that the challenge the Commission faced in the recent elections was a fluke and was not an indication of what would happen in 2015.

The INEC Chairman said the Commission was committed to lifting the bar remarkably better than 2011 in terms of delivering elections that were free, fair and credible.
