The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun sensitisation tour in Lagos State as part of its efforts to ensure a hitch-free election and proper registration of voters.

Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, Mr. Adekunle Ogunmola, said during the sensitisation programme at the secretariat of Yaba Local Council Development Area that the commission would create more polling units in order to bring voting centres closer to the people.

Ogunmola, who spoke on ‘Delineation of Constituencies/Continuous Registration of Voters’, told the residents that registration of voters would begin soon, according to a statement on Wednesday.

He, therefore, called for support of all stakeholders in the state.

“When the time of registration is near, we are going to inform the people. We are ready for 2015 election without any breach of law,” he said.

Ogunmola said the commission had worked on hiccups noticed in 2011 elections, adding that the 2015 election would be totally different.

“Since 2011, we have done a lot of work to correct the shortcomings we had in 2011 election. These we have adequately addressed,” he said.

He said if the commission could not delineate constituencies, it would create additional polling units.

The Resident Commissioner explained that 20 million voter cards had been received, saying they were still expecting more.

He said, “The accreditation this time will be done electronically when it is time for election. This will disallow impersonation.

“As of now, we only have 25 parties while 40 were deregistered. We are planning to send out the names of the qualified parties in order for the public to know them.”

Ogunmola stated that the commission would engage some officers to register the eligible voters and also enlighten the people on the process of voting and on the parties’ aspirants.

He assured Nigerians that the election that would take place in Osun, Ekiti and Anambra states in 2014 would indicate that INEC meant business.
