The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday said it doubted former governor Gbenga Daniel’s claim of loyalty to President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Ogun PDP expressed the doubt against the backdrop of a recent statement credited to Daniel in which he said he was “irrevocably committed to the Goodluck Jonathan project and will support his aspirations wherever and whenever.”
The party in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Waliu Oladipupo, said that Daniel had failed to prove his commitment to the Jonathan 2015 project.
He added, “By his comments, Daniel seems to be giving another meaning to the saying ‘if you love me, love my dog.’ For, if he is truly committed to Mr. President, he would associate with him warts and all.”
The Ogun PDP wondered why the former governor pledged his loyalty to the President instead of reaffirming his defection to the Labour Party.
The party stressed that if Daniel could leave the PDP after the party made him politically, “he has already betrayed Mr. President and the entire party.”
It therefore urged the President not to be deceived by what it described as “Daniel’s Ziggy,” adding, that the ex-governor’s loyalty was to himself and Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, which he wanted to continue to use to mobilise for the LP.
The PDP noted that the circumstances in which Daniel defected to the LP were different from that of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State.
“While Mimiko’s decision to leave the PDP for LP was by popular demand, Daniel’s adventure is driven by ego and some parochial interests. He wants to have it his own way at all times.
“Again, since leaving the PDP for LP, Governor Mimiko has remained consistent unlike Daniel who moved from the Alliance for Democracy to PDP; from PDP to the Peoples Party of Nigeria and now LP. If he does not get what he wants in LP, you can be sure he will leave for any other platform that catches his fancy,” Oladipupo said.
