ABEOKUTA — OGUN State chapter of the People Democratic Party, PDP, has said the only way the Baraje-led faction of the PDP can stop President Goodluck Jonathan from re-contesting in 2015 is by amending the 1999 Constitution.
The party which maintained that President Jonathan is constitutionally qualified to re-contest for president in 2015, however urged the aggrieved members of the party to quit if they are not pleased with the second term ambition of the President.
Chairman of the PDP, Chief Bayo Dayo who spoke during the Ogun East Senatorial District PDP meeting held in Ijebu-Ode , insisted that the PDP was one in the state and at the national level.
According to him, “I know for sure that if they don’t want President Jonathan for the second term, they will have to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That is for a fact. Of course, people can start to agitate for one thing or the other in a big party like ours, but at the end of the day, we will resolve our differences. Those who are saying that there are two PDP, do not know what they are saying. PDP is one in Ogun State. Anyone who says he is in new PDP, he should just stay in the confine of his own house to say that. PDP is PDP. There is no new PDP or old PDP.
“ Of course, people can get annoyed.PDP is a very large party and when you are managing a large party like this, there is bound to be confrontation, there are bound to be differences and when we have differences, there is nothing we can do than to resolve it. But if at the end of the day you don’t like the party, it is a free world. You can go to anywhere you like. But there is no party registered in Nigeria today that is called new PDP. The new PDP has not gone to INEC to seek registration or has the INEC told us that PDP is two. PDP is only one.
“When Otunba Gbenga Daniel told us he was going to Labour Party, it is a free world. You can go to anywhere you like. We cannot tie him down and say you have to be in PDP by all means. When we went for the National Convention, they knew the game was not favouring them and there was nothing they could do.”
This is what we have been shouting about in the past two years in Ogun State.”
