The Presidency said on Friday that the statement by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress accusing President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration of lawlessness was a ruse.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, told the State House correspondents that contrary to the allegation, Jonathan’s administration had been most tolerant of opposition.

Abati said Jonathan administration remained committed to democracy and its principles irrespective of what the opposition party might want people to believe.

He said, “Where elections are concerned, it is a known fact that the President is committed to free and fair elections and the integrity of the process.”

On the Ekiti State governorship election, Abati said, “Mr. President remained steadfast on his concept of one man, one vote,” adding: “Security agencies have a duty to stop those who may wish to compromise the process from achieving their aim.”

Rather than crying wolf where there is none, the presidential spokesman asked the leaders of the APC to embark on soul searching.

He said, “It is absolutely wrong to accuse this administration of repression. If anything, this administration has been most tolerant of opposition and most respectful of everybody’s right of association. This accusation cannot stand at all.”
