President of Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, Mallam Shehu Sani, yesterday, lambasted the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party for spearheading the impeachment of the Adamawa State Governor, Murtla Nyako, describing it as vendetta.
Sani, in a statement made available to Saturday Vanguard in Abuja last night, warned that the action of the Presidency and the PDP was a serious threat to national peace and the democratic process.
According to him, the move to unseat Nyako was nothing but a scripted exercise by the ruling party to persecute and punish the governor for his principled stance to defect to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
While describing the move as condemnable and unacceptable, Sani said it was desperate plot by the PDP to retake Adamawa from the APC by all means, insisting that the action was part of the bush-clearing for Jonathan exercise for Jonathan’s 2015 election.
Sani said, “The impeachment notice served to Governor Murtala Nyako and his deputy Bala Ngilari by the Adamawa state House of Assembly stands unambiguously condemned. It’s nothing other than a scripted exercise by the ruling PDP to punish and persecute Governor Nyako for his principled stand to defect to the APC. The impeachment plot is a facade by the PDP and the Federal Government to retake the state.
“The impeachment is a threat to peace and the democratic process. It’s unacceptable and abhorable. Governor Nyako is a victim of political vendetta. Its most unfortunate that while the nation burns in the flames of insurgency, the ruling PDP and the Federal Government is more interested in intimidating and harassing dissenting and defecting state governors.
“The action by the Adamawa state House of Assembly is not different from the earlier failed attempts made in Rivers, Nasarawa, Kano and Edo states.
While admitting that it is the constitutional responsibilities of the state Houses of Assembly to perform its oversight function and hold the executive to account, Sani said however that it was unethical and immoral for the state lawmakers to compromise their conscience and allow themselves to play the puppet.
“Removing governor Nyako and his deputy amount to nothing but regime change in disguise. Impeaching Nyako is part of the bush clearing exercise of Jonathan’s 2015 presidential ambitions,” Sani noted.
Reacting to the harassment and intimidation of APC governors on their way to the APC rally in Ekiti by the military human rights activist, warned the military and the aviation authorities to desist from acting as if they were working for the PDP and not Nigeria.
He said, “It is unacceptable for the aviation authorities and the security agencies to take a partisan stand on the elections. It is now evidently clear that the aviation authorities have become the air wing of the ruling PDP.
“Impounding and grounding planes carrying opposition leaders has now become a tool for political cruelty and persecution. The partisan interference of the Aviation authorities is a clear breach of the principles and rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO.
“The Ekiti elections must not be rigged. Any attempt to rig the Ekiti election amounts to incitement. We will report to the International Criminal Court, ICC, in The Hague on the on going process of the Ekiti elections. The Federal Government has so far not shown fairness and discipline in the run up to the elections.
“The Ekiti election is a pointer to the 2015 General elections. If the INEC fails to conduct a free and fair election in Ekiti State, the 2015 general elections awaits a doomed fate. The PDP needs to be reminded that it cannot win elections with the Army and the police alone.
“Nigeria’s democratic process is not a gift given to us by the military; it was a product of bitter struggle and sacrifice; we will not fold our arms and see it being systematically destroyed by desperate forces in Government and the ruling PDP,” Sani warned.
